Washington County, Missouri

Alexander Craighead was a Scottish descendant who came to Missouri from Tennessee. In 1816 Alexander opened a store on Goose Creek in what is now Caledonia in Bellevue Valley, Washington County, Missouri. His store was a double log cabin with one side used as the store & the other side was his residence. Circa 1818 Alexander, at the age of 26, platted the town of Caledonia & offered the lots for sale. He said whoever purchased the first lot could name the town. He then purchased the first lot (#41) & named the town Caledonia after Caledonia, Scotland. Alexander's lineal male predecessors through his gr. gr. grandfather were all Presbyterian ministers |
