Crenshaw Family History
Washington County, Missouri

Joseph Cosby Crenshaw - B: 1830 in Kentucky.  Crenshaw was a former slave owner from Charleston, Mississippi County, Missouri.  After his first wife died in 1876 he remarried & moved to Caledonia, Washington County, Missouri.  Joseph died in 1898 & was taken back to Charleston for burial.  Children by first wife Martha Bridwell:  James b:1853, Richard, Marvin, Isaac, Mary, Charles, Henry, Frances, Joseph b:1874.

His second wife was Mrs. Rachel Ann Lusk Marbury.  While living in Caledonia Rachel Ann Crenshaw kept roomers & boarders who attended the Bellevue Collegiate Institute.

Rachel had three sons by her previous husband who died in Mississippi County, Missouri in 1875.  Those sons were Horatio L., Benjamin H. & Alexander B. Marbury & a daughter Bessie. The Crenshaw family moved to Caledonia, Washington County, Missouri where their children could attend the Bellevue Collegiate Institute.

Rachel & Joseph's son, William Cosby Crenshaw, was born in 1880 in Mississippi County, Missouri.  He married Bessie Pearl Ramsey in the home of Helen Eversole 26 Dec. 1900.  He was a dentist & they later moved to St. Louis.

1920 census C. W. Crenshaw (age 40) is listed as the head of the family, Pearl R. is his wife.  Rachel A. is listed in the family as C.W.'s mother.  C.W. & Pearl's children are:  Mildred, Margorie, & Wm. C. Jr.

1922 - Bessie Pearl & William's daughter Mildred married Wm. Thomas Coghill in 1922 & they moved into the Crenshaw home.

1923 - Rachel died 12 August at City Hospital in St. Louis 1923 (death cert.)  She is buried in Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery, Caledonia.

1930 census the Crenshaw family consisting of William C. & Pearl & their son William C., Jr., are living in St. Louis.

1930 census the Coghill family consisting of W.T. Coghill (age 28), his wife Mildred (age 26) & child W.T. Coghill (age 2 yrs. 9 mo.) are living in St. Francois T., St. Francois Co., Mo.
