Genealogy/Family History ~ * = my lineage

The Doggett family history can be traced back to the early 1500's in Groton, Suffolk, England.  The Doggetts were wealthy enough to be members of the minor gentry.

RICHARD DOGGETT* of Groton, Suffolk, England - 1526

JOHN DOGGETT* (son of Richard).  Died circa 1564

WILLIAM DOGGETT*  (son of John).  Died 1610 in Boxton

WILLIAM DOGGETT* (son of William).  Died 1670 County Suffolk

REV. BENJAMIN DOGGETT* -  Rev. Benjamin Doggett was born 1636 in Suffolk, England.  Benjamin left Hadleigh, England, & came to America circa 1669 when he received the appointment of the Bishop of London to be a minister in Lancaster County, Virginia.  In 1670 he was presented to the governor of the colony for appointment as minister of the two churches of Trinity Parish.  Soon thereafter the parish was divided into two separate parishes of Christ Church and St. Mary’s White Chapel, with Benjamin as minister of both parishes. George Washington’s grandfather was a leading member of the St. Mary’s White Chapel congregation.  Benjamin, also a large plantation owner, & his wife Jane had seven children which provided them with many descendants.  born circa 1636 & was son of William Doggett. Benjamin came to America circa 1669 when he was sent to serve as minister in Lancaster County, Virginia. His will in Virginia dated 1681/82 names five children: Benjamin, Richard, William, Jane , Ann

RICHARD DOGGETT* son of Rev. Benjamin Doggett.  Richard born circa 1670 in Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia.  Died June, 1721 in Lancaster County

GEORGE DOGGETT* son of Richard. Born circa 1795 Virginia.   Married Ann Chattin daughter of Thomas Chattin & Margaret Miller.  George died circa 1758/59 Culpepper County, Va.

MILLER DOGGETT* was born circa 1736 in Virginia & is believed to be the son of George Doggett & Ann Chattin.   Ann was the daughter of Thomas Chattin & Margaret Miller of Culpepper County, Virginia.  Miller Doggett married a woman named Mary circa 1763 & they became the parents of nine children. Many of these people would become early settlers in that part of Missouri Territory which would later become Ste. Genevieve County then Washington County & finally St. Francois County.  Miller served under George Washington in the French and Indian War & also served in the Revolutionary War. Miller died in 1807 in Tennessee.

GEORGE DOGGETT* (my 5th great grandfather) came from Tennessee to Missouri.  George is the son of Miller Doggett the Revolutionary War soldier.  George Doggett died intestate in St.Louis, Missouri.  His six children are named in the final probate settlement - including his daughter Rhoda Doggett Jackson.

*RHODA DOGGETT was my 4th great grandmother.   She was born in Tennessee in 1797 and was the daughter of George Doggett.  She was first married  to her cousin Jesse Doggett.   Jesse died Oct. 1824 in St. Ferdinand Township, St. Louis, Mo.  Jesse & Rhoda had one son:

George M.G. Doggett - born in 1817 in Tennessee & came to Missouri with his parents in 1818.

Rhoda & Jesse returned to Missouri in 1818.  After Isaac Doggett's death in that year in what would later become St. Francois County they were the sellers of his property.

In January of 1823 Jesse was the appraiser of a stray taken up by Martin Witerwitch.  Also in August of the same year he appraised a stray taken up by Patrick Malone.  The receipt was signed with an "x".

Jesse Doggett died intestate in St. Louis, Missouri in 1824.   John D. Doggett was the administrator of his estate.  Jesse's probate papers name Rhoda as his wife & George M.G. Doggett as his son.

Rhoda had remarried by 1829 & I am descended from Rhoda and her second husband WILLIAM JACKSON who was from either Tennessee or Kentucky. Rhoda & William had five children. In 1850 Rhoda & her children Eliza, Martha, Frances & Asa were residing with her son George M.G. Doggett in St. Francois County.  Rhoda was not in the 1860 St. Francois County census so may have died between 1850 and 1860.

Joyce Wafford is looking for Georgeann Doggett born in St. Francois County, Missouri  1865.
