JOHN HAWKINS - was born 22 December 1762 in Burke/buncombe North Carolina.  He was the son of Augustine Hawkins & Elizabeth Henley. John was a Revolutionary War soldier at the age of 16 & was a substitute under George Washington.  He served over 2 years.

John came to Washington County, Missouri circa 1790.  He married Rebecca KESTER/CUSTER 18 June 1799 at Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.   They became the parents of twelve children:  Mary Ruth, Elizabeth H., Susan, Joseph, John F., Isaac Custer, Austin Henry, Eliza Sophia, William Washington, James H., Nancy, Augustus.  

John served with the Legislature & was a County Commissioner.  He was the first elected surveyor of Washington County.  Served as a trustee for the Potosi Acacemy established in 1816. 

John died 24 July 1840 or 1841 at Hawkins Mill, Washington County, Missouri.  He is buried in the Potosi City Cemetery beside his son Austin Hawkins.  His tombstone no longer exists or has been covered with grass.

Children of Rebecca Kester/Custer:

Mary Ruth was born 10 July 1800 near Potosi.  She married John Rice Jones Jr. 25 Jan 1818.  She & her husband went to Texas with Austin Colonies.  Mary died 8 September 1837 in Quantana, Texas.

Elizabeth H. was born 26 December 1801.  She married Dr. Scruggs.   They moved to Tennessee & the Mississippi.

Susan was born 9 March 1803 near Potosi.  She married Samuel Peter Browne.  They went to Texas with the 2nd Colony.  Susan died 26 May 1836.

Jospeh was born 14 December 1804.  He was six weeks old when he died in 31 January 1805.

John F. was born 24 March 1806 near Potosi.  He married Susan R. Massy.

Isaac Custard was born 4 October 1807 near Potosi.  Went to Texas with the second Austin Colonists.

Austin Henry was born 31 December 1808 near Potosi.  He was married to Sarah Mier.  Austin died 31 January 1869 near Potosi & is burried in the Presbyterian Cemetery.

Elizabeth Sophia was born 2 December 1810. She was married to Ashley A. Stephens.  They went to Texas with second Austin Colonists.

William Washington was born 11 November 1810 near Potosi. He was married first to Sophia Ridgeway & second to Janet R. Edwards.  They went to Texas with the second Austin Colonists.  William died 6 July 1886 & is burried in Early Chapel in Lexington, Lee County Texas.

James H. was born 11 September 1814 near Potosi.  He was married to Rachel Ann Cole. Was living in Breton T., WashCoMo., in 1870 cn.  James died sometime after 1880 in Washington County, Missouri.

Nancy was born 27 September 1816 near Potosi.  She died 16 September 1834.

Augustus was born 31 April 1818 near Potosi.  He married Elizabeth Jane Pinson 29 March 1841.  In the 1850 census the Augustus Hawkins family is listed as:  Augustus, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Jane, Newton, Emily, Milton, William.   The family is living between the Peter W. Murphy & James H. Hawkins families.   Other near-by neighbors are:  Stinnett, Govero, Rongy, Blackwell, Perryman, Cain, Wilkerson, Cole, Smith, Clapp, Marler.  Augustus Hawkins died 26 August 1890 & is burried in the Pinson Cemetery in Blackwell, Washington County, Missouri.
