Herculaneum, located at the mouth of Joachim Creek, was founded in 1808 by Moses Austin & S. Hammond.  It was the first county seat of Jefferson County.  It was the shipping point for lead smelted at Valle's Mines, Richwoods, Old Mines, Potosi & other mines in Washington County.  At one time Herculaneum contained two shot towers & other works for smelting & casting lead, 35 houses, four stores, a postoffice, jail & schoolhouse, & a warehouse for storing lead & other merchandise.
