Herculaneum, located at the mouth of Joachim Creek, was
founded in 1808 by Moses Austin & S.
Hammond. It was the first county seat of Jefferson County. It was the shipping
point for lead smelted at Valle's Mines, Richwoods,
Old Mines, Potosi
& other mines in Washington County. At one
time Herculaneum contained two shot towers & other works for smelting & casting
lead, 35 houses, four stores, a postoffice, jail & schoolhouse, & a warehouse for
storing lead & other merchandise. |
