ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, MISSOURI
(CIRCA 1948)
*November 11, 1999 - I was going through a box of old family papers & pictures when I found a fold-out picture postcard of St. Francois County that my grandfather, August Ziock,Jr., sent to me when I lived in St. Louis. The postcard, which had a three cent stamp on it, was dated October 8, 1948 (I was seven months old then.) I have given the information & pictures of that postcard below:

THE LEAD BELT
St. Francois County, MissouriTHE LEAD BELT
In the foot hills of the rolling Ozarks lies one of the richest areas in the United States in Lead deposits. In the valleys and on the hill sides are built the thriving communities which are pictured in the folder. An area made up of the people of all nations living together as good Americans. The country itself is picturesque, its people have built for themselves the finest churches and school system possible. This is a vacation land for the Mid-West, the Lead Belt being the gateway to the Arcadia Valley, one of nature's most beautiful vacation lands. The Lead Belt produces most of the world's lead supply and the refuse from the mines has been piled into huge mounds known as Chat Dumps which are amazing to all who observe them. There are other industries as well including shoe factories, dress factories and a Radio Station. Its people are civic minded and its civic clubs are very active. We invite you to come to The Lead Capital of the world.
The Chamber of Commerce of Flat River has sponsored the formation of this picture folder. It is the hope of this organization that these pictures may have a wide distribution. And that they may reach people, who are interested in this portion of the United States, both from a recreational and industrial angle. Then to the hundreds of people, who have at one time or another, made their home in this area, we know that this folder will be most welcome.
The Chamber of Commerce is happy to have had the opportunity to engage in this type of effort because it is our desire to do every thing possible to make St. Francois County, Missouri well known throughout these United States.
