Meet the Mascots

SHADOW IS Wags and Purrs Animal Adoption Center

StaffDog1.JPG (21156 bytes)Shadow was brought to us because the gentleman said he was uncontrolable.  We loved on him for a little while and then put him in a kennel before we could get back inside the building  he had escaped from the kennel and the compound area and was sitting at the door waiting to be let in.  After about 5 tries we decided that it was no use  he was not staying in the kennel   for the next few days we watched him closely to see if he was aggressive but we kept falling over him (thus, the name) HE LOVES AND WANT TO BE LOVE BY MOST PEOPLE AND HAS BEEN A GREAT MASCOT THAT HAS GONE TO SCHOOLS, RETIREMENT HOMES, HOSPITALS ETC TO VISIT THOSE WHO NEED TO TOUCH AND FEEL.  He has a automatic on switch.  When he goes through the door of a special visit his motor starts running and he will do everything he can to show what a good dog is like.  He doesn't bark in the buildings will heel and sit right with me and if given a command will promptly do it  (no training was ever given)  All the children in the schools know him by sight.  When he and three other dogs were swiped from our compound area, we sent word to the schools that he was missing and it was the kids that found our dogs.  We had all the law enforcement, radio, etc personnel looking and making announcements about the missing mascot but it was the kids that found out where the dogs were (2 separate places) and we were able to recover all four dogs.  We have people who say that when something happens to Shadow they will not come back because Shadow is the Humane Soceity of the Ozarks.  We have had him since 1989  he and Hazel came within a week of each other and are the orginial Mascot.   Two little stories:  First, I was at a school talking about taking care of animals and so on.  Was talking about how we got Shadow and how good a dog he was etc  Was telling them how to stop their pets from jumping up on them and that Shadow never did this and right on cue  up he came and down we went.  At the time he out-weighed me by a few pounds.  The kids thought it was part of the speech and I thought it was funny because he never did that before or again.  But, I certainly got a bath that day  lick  lick  lick.  The second story is special.  Was visiting a school were a little boy had lost his father in a car accident and he was in a wheelchair, probably for life,  he would not talk or communicate with anyone.  They ask me if I would take Shadow in to see him after visiting the class we were there to see.  Said I would be glad to,  When we came out of the class room, Shadow broke from me, which is something he never did, he entered a room and the next thing I heard was a squeal of delight.  Shadow had found the little boy and had his front legs on the boys lap and was licking and loving on him.  We stayed at the door and let Shadow work his magic.  The little boy talked to Shadow and loved on him and by the time Shadow was done   the little boy was smiling and started asking questions about Shadow.  The first thing the teachers did was to call the boys mother and she came over to the school and loved on Shadow and me thanking us for giving her little boy back.  She also, came to the Shelter and adopted a black lab puppy for the boy and as far as I know, the little boy and the dog are quite a pair.  I do not know whether he was ever able to walk again but he sure was one happy little boy.  Shadow is a flat-coated retriever and is almost 15--since he has started having health problems and is like most of us senior citizens, alittle crouchy) he has been retired from going to school because of the amount of children at one time but he still goes to the retirement homes.  HE IS ONE OF A KIND AND WE WERE MIGHTY LUCKY THAT HIS ORGINIAL OWNER HAD NO IDEA WHAT KIND OF DOG HE HAD.

Hazel the three legged cat.

Hazel has been with us since 1989 and she had the leg missing when she came.  The gentleman that brought her in said that she was born without the leg but the next day a lady came in and said that she knew the cat and that it had been cut off in a combine.  So, we really don't know the true story but it certainly hasn't slowed her down.  Her claws are deformed and the vet seems to think she was born with out the leg.  Take your choice.

Mama-Baby
This is mama-baby, it took my husband three years of coaxing and offering treats to get this dog to trust him enough  to allow him to put her in his car, she was injured at the time, and bring her to the shelter.  She wears scars from beatings, she has shot scars and he knows that she was hit several times by motorist who aimed to hit her.  When he finally got her to the shelter it took her an hour or two to realize that she was safe and from then on---she would guard what she knew to be her home.  We wanted to be sure that the remainder of her life was happy and that is why she is not up for adoption.  She is kept from the general public during the hours we are open but is left to roam at night.  Quite a deterent for anyone who wishes to come inside the fence line because she will bite.  She is very special to us all and has a home at the shelter for as long as she lives---she has lived through hell and this little bit of heaven is the best we can do for her.
